Spending a Day in Mexico City!

Hi Everyone!

We wanted to share our experiences spending a day in Mexico City! On our flight to Ecuador from Boston, we chose to have a 20 hour layover in Mexico City so that we could go downtown and explore for a bit (and check off another country!). We landed in Mexico City at 5:00 AM, so we found these comfy grass pads in the airport and slept for a few hours.

Once we felt a bit refreshed, we decided it was time to do some exploring! We did something crazy: we took the subway from the airport to downtown Mexico City! All of our friends and family thought we were crazy for doing this, but we felt very safe the whole time. The subway system was actually very easy to navigate, even with our limited Spanish. So long as you are cautious and aware of your surroundings, and don’t do anything to stand out, the subway is a good choice. It saves a ton of money versus taking a taxi or booking a private ride - we spent less than $1 USD on our subway tickets!

Since we were on a time crunch and wanted the best “bang for our buck”, we opted to take a city bus tour using City Tour Mexico. Tickets were only 160 pesos, or $8! By doing this, we were able to see all the highlights of Mexico City. While we were buying our tickets, we saw a churro stand so we had to eat a ton of those - yum! During our tour, we made stops at Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe, Catedral Metropolitana, Monumento a la Independencia, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Plaza de la Constitución, and others! The Plaza was really cool because since we were there on December 30th, everything was decorated for Christmas! After doing some sightseeing, we were getting hungry so what did we eat? TACOS of course! THE best tacos ever!

After lunch, we decided to visit a museum since we both enjoy history. We went to the Museo Nacional de Antropología, which is the largest and most visited museum in Mexico. While at the museum, we got to see some amazing archaeological and anthropological artifacts from all different time periods of Mexico's heritage. It’s definitely worth a visit if you have the time and like history!

And then it was back to the airport! We really enjoyed being able to spend the day in Mexico City seeing new things! Check out some of our photos in the slideshow below!

PRO TRAVEL TIP: DO NOT throw away your immigration card if you are on a layover! Adam made this (silly) mistake and he had to buy a new one for $50 at the airport.
